Find out why attending one of our seminars is a must if you’re a new director, and sign yourself up to attend the next one.
My name is Sue Thomas and I’m an events manager working in the Companies House business outreach team. All year round our team deliver a variety of seminars up and down the country, the most popular event we run is our first time director’s seminar.
The seminar is designed to help newly appointed officers understand their responsibilities under the Companies Act 2006. We provide face to face support and advice about anything relating to filing requirements, as well as explaining the changes resulting from the Small Business, Enterprise and Employment Act 2015.
One of the biggest changes under this act has been the introduction of the confirmation statement, which replaced the annual return on 30 June 2016. This has been the focus of many questions, with directors assuming that they would need to file one straight away. As we help to explain, this isn’t the case, you only need to file your first confirmation statement when it’s the anniversary of your company’s incorporation.
Another topic that attracts lots of questions is the requirement to provide information about people with significant control (PSC). During the seminar we talk through various company scenarios, explain the conditions you need to consider when trying to identify your PSCs and how to supply this information to us.
We also provide demos of our services, such as how to use the Companies House Service to regularly check the information held about an individual’s company or their competitors. Newly appointed officers are always surprised to learn how easy it is to file documents electronically using our WebFiling service.
People are even more impressed when they learn that they can jointly file accounts to both Companies House and HMRC using the Company Accounts and Tax Online service (CATO). This is always a winner because it’s easy to use and enables you to satisfy your accounts filings with two organisations at the same time.
As you can see we cover a wide range of topics at the seminar and are always happy to answer your questions on anything related to Companies House.
Attendees usually appreciate the seminars and this is reflected in feedback we receive. For example, a company director remarked: “The first time director seminar really points you in the right direction regardless of what you know or are yet to discover.” And another said: “Really interesting and informative – I’d recommend attending one annually to make sure you stay up-to-date”
Take a look at our events calendar to see where we’re headed next. If you cannot attend one in person we’re now also hosting webinars, including joint ones with HMRC – registration details for these will also appear on our events calendar.
